Borojo nutritional and health Benefits

Description of Borojo
Borojo is an Embera word meaning head fruit boro = head, jo = fruit. Embera is a language in eastern Panama. Borojo is from the family of Rubiaceae, its scientific name is Borojoa patinoi cuatrec. There is also Borojoa sorbilis cautrec, both species are similar but vary in type of soil they grow. Borojo is found in Columbia (some parts), Ecuador and Panama. It grows to about 7 - 12cm in length. It is considered ripe when it falls from the tree. Turns brownish when is ripe. Borojo has an ORAC value of 4500 micro molTE/100g.

Borojo contains high level of calcium, protein, ascorbic acid (Ascorbic acid is a naturally occurring organic compound with antioxidant properties), iron and very high level of phosphorus.  It also contains Niacin (vitamin B3) and Amino acid. Borojo has polyphenol present in it especially in its powdered form.
